On 24 May 1941, in the Battle of the Denmark Strait, the British battlecruiser HMS Hood engaged the battleship Bismarck and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen. Struck in one of her magazines, she exploded and sank within a few minutes, with the loss of almost her entire crew.
