What tactical advantage did the MG42's quick-change barrel system provide?

  • It allowed sustained fire without the weapon being disabled by overheating
  • It allowed firing two different calibres with the same barrel
  • It made the tripod unnecessary
  • It cut the weapon's total weight in half

A trained gunner could swap a red-hot barrel in just a few seconds, essential given its extreme rate of fire, which would otherwise overheat and damage the barrel quickly during sustained fire.

What feature did many units of the M26 Pershing's 90 mm gun have?

  • A muzzle brake visible at the end of the barrel
  • A short howitzer-type barrel
  • A double barrel mounted in parallel

Many M26 units had a visible muzzle brake at the end of the 90 mm barrel, which reduced recoil.

  • Schurzen-type plates or mesh
  • A double hull of cast steel
  • An extra layer of Zimmerit
  • An anti-magnetic rubber lining

Unlike open tank destroyers like the Marder, tanks like the Panzer IV added Schurzen to reinforce their flanks.

  • Mechanical failures and accidents in takeoffs and long flights
  • Sabotage at the Mariana Islands bases
  • Collisions with Japanese incendiary balloons
  • Navigation errors due to lack of maps

Accidents and mechanical failures, especially during fully loaded takeoffs, caused as many losses as enemy action.

Compared with Operation Frankton, which attacked merchant ships in a French port using canoes, what kind of target and setting characterised the operation using X-Craft midget submarines?

  • A large German battleship sheltering in a Norwegian fjord

  • A railway bridge in the Alps

Operation Source focused on a high-value naval target, the Tirpitz, hidden in a Norwegian fjord, unlike the merchant ships attacked at Bordeaux.
